Brief// Working with JUNK IT

Brief

Design an illustrated poster to be used to promote a band.

Details

I was asked to produce an illustration for a new music project. At the time 'JUNK IT' was one person but has currently expanded into 3. I've already worked with JUNK IT since the begining of this year (2017) however will continue to work with the project as a visual artist in the future.  After a few meetings I began work on an idea of a penis with a ribbon around it. The idea itself came from a doodle I had done in my sketchbook, for a personal gallery show I was planning on putting on which focused on feminised heterosexual male sexualities. Using photoshop I created the first image, keeping the illustration style slightly away from my usual drawing routine. I forced on colours and shades that resembled bruises, so blues, purples, pinks and yellows. At the time I was also helping JUNK IT come up with ways to promote themselves and was currently working on my own business cards at Awesomemerch.com. I saw the website offered badge printing, so put in an order for JUNK IT badges as well (only 7, a test drive).  Our aim is to produce posters and visuals, however these aren't needed until after September 2017 so we haven't begun working on that brief yet.

Outcome

Below is the illustration I produced for JUNK IT, as well as the badge version of the illustration.

Censored Version

We had a meeting about censorship, in the project I attempted to censor my own illustration with the projects name however I thought censoring the illustration defeated it's own purpose. JUNK IT has decided to use the illustration within the project, not necessarily not to promote but as not the only method of promotion for the project. Below are the examples of censorship I tried. I later produced a series of badges of the digital painting to promote Junk It. As of yet, I am still working with JUNK IT and am currently acting as 'official illustrator/visual artist'. We're hoping to produce work by the end of 2017, as the band is still forming and unsure of what sort of representations they want.

For now, here's the image we're using to promote the project.

For future involvement with the project,  we've decided to try and set up a home studio screen printing space to print posters, tote bags and maybe shirts. We're planning on having things to promote the band made and sell-able by the time the next wave of first year students settle into leeds - in order to hopefully hit the 'sweet spot' of student fresher lifestyle.
